Camp in your bedroom and lower your heating bill

Room in Room by iKamper is an indoor tent, designed to conserve heat and make your bed warm and comfortable during winter. The tent is specially designed to present the most efficient heat conserving winter supply and it conserves and circulates heat inside while blocking the cold air outside. Room in Room comes in different sizes that fit your bed/mattress, closing out every inch of space where cold air could come in.

room in room 1iKamper’s test shows that the temperature difference between the inside and outside of Room in Room is approximately 10 Fahrenheit and it could go even higher depending on how you use it. By using Room in Room, you can save money and environment at the same time. You can reduce carbon dioxide emission by turning off heaters and lowering thermostat at your home. Instead, use Room in Room to keep yourself warm and cozy during winter.

iKamper has calculated how much they estimate you could save on your next heating bill:

room in room 6By placing your mobile phone on the built-in phone stand, you can watch a movie in the most comfortable manner you can ever imagine. Just like the lap top stand, you can easily change the position of your smart phone. You can make the screen closer or further away from your face, change angle and direction of the screen, and touch control.

Ikamper has launched a Kickstarter funding campaign where you can buy a single size Room in Room for $70 and a double size Room in Room for $80. More info here.

Professor Dumpster launches affordable micro apartments for urban dwellers

The best ideas often spring from unanticipated sources and the tiny smart home Kasita is no exception. When Jeff Wilson aka Professor Dumpster spent a year living in a used dumpster, a social experiment that reduced the definition of “home” to a 33 square foot extreme, a concept emerged.

While the dumpster was, in many ways, an impractical dwelling, there were a surprising number of perks: it could move anywhere; rent was low; commutes were short; and the local neighborhood became an intimate living room.

As the experiment drew to a close, Wilson took what he’d learned and returned to the drawing board where Kasita came to life, a new category of home that married iconic design and pioneering technology with insights gleaned from a trashcan.

Interior From Hallway Bed Slides Out From Under CouchThe Kasita is 208 square feet with 10-foot ceilings and is designed to not only feel spacious and full of light, but to be fully equipped with all the amenities you would find in a traditional home or apartment—and then some. In addition to a walk-in shower, refrigerator, and convection oven the design team have also thrown in a dishwasher, washer/dryer combo, cooktop, and a queen size bed that easily tucks away out of sight (without having to even make it).

Interior Kithen Bath LaundryYour Kasita will welcome you home by
adjusting the A/C, bringing up the
lights and shades, and queueing your favorite playlist. Or, ask your Kasita to do something else (like rolling
out the bed) via hands-free voice commands throughout.

Interior TilesKasita’s unique tile system allows for virtually infinite customizations and options for the home while maintaining order and function.

AUSTIN DOWNTOWN CESAR CHAVEZ

The best part (in my humble opinion) is that the apartments are expected to rent at half of the market rate for a studio. The company expects to have Kasitas on the ground in Austin in 2016 and they are exploring rollout in ten additional cities (including one international city) starting in 2017.AUSTIN DOWNTOWN SEAHOLMSpend your money on life — not rent. Through partnerships with local entities, Kasita will rent units at about half the market rate of a studio apartment. In Downtown Austin, that’s about $600 a month.AUSTIN DOWNTOWN HOPEKasita is the smallest home built for the city. Its tiny size presents almost limitless opportunities for location.

From outdated trailer to trendy tiny home

The two New Englanders Heather and Dana met in college and fell in love. A few months after graduation, they spent a month road tripping, and realized that all they needed fit into a single station wagon. So they decided to try out the tiny life. They went on the hunt for a camper they could convert into a tiny home.

dana“We decided that we would go for a newer, better kept model, so that we could focus on what we really cared about- converting it into a comfortable living space. On Craigslist, we found a trailer that stood out; a 2010 23 foot trailer. We took a look at it, and realized the potential it had. Later that day, the owner towed it to our apartment!”

travel-trailer-tiny-house-14But the Surveyor Travel Trailer wasn’t exactly decorated to Heather and Dana’s taste.“It was the classic wood veneer cabinetry and ugly wallpaper. It was livable for a weekend, and thankfully all of the appliances were in good shape. But we wanted more. We started out doing a couple small projects, and kept realizing new potential for this little place and ended up nearly redoing it all.”

A tiny eco cabin retreat in Crete

The lovely eco cabin retreat “House on Wheels” was commissioned by a yoga teacher from Glasgow and designed and built by Echo Living in their workshop in Scotland. It was then shipped to a remote site on the island of Crete, and the little, off-grid hideaway now sits amongst the olive trees and opens up to reveal a beautiful spruce lined living space, with stunning sea views.

echo-living-tiny-house-1The building was designed to fit its site with minimal environmental impact and to satisfy local planning requirement that stipulated that the building should be on wheels. Measurements were taken to plot the position of the ancient trees, and the little cabin was designed to sit between them, and also to fit the dimensions of a single lorry for the trip to Crete. Transferred onto a Hiab for the final leg of the journey down dusty, single-track roads, it was finally craned into place between three ancient olive trees. Members of Echo Living’s team installed the building, overseeing its delivery and installation, and putting the finishing touches to the interior and exterior.

echo-living-tiny-house-10The eco cabin has a minimal aesthetic and is off grid; it is powered by solar panels and is heated on cool evenings and during the increasingly snowy, winter months by a small wood burning stove. The discreet double bed space is on a raised platform and has its own little wardrobe, a built-in bedside table with reading light and view to the sea. Above the window wall, a floating roof detail, with flaps running the length of the building, provide extra ventilation; the flaps are held open by small weights made from local stone.

echo-living-tiny-1The interior is lined in spruce timber panels and has a natural finish and the floor finish is timber and tiles. The living area has built in seating area with a skylight above and large storage drawers beneath the fireplace The stove and flue sit on a slate hearth in front of a tiled upright which separates the small bed space from the sitting area  and has shelving to the bed side. The tiles are the client’s own and were reclaimed from a Glasgow tenement.

echo-living-tiny-house-11Open shelving and the hand built, compact kitchen  are suspended in front of the large windows; a timber wall to the side of the kitchen pivots open to extend the space onto the adjacent decking. The kitchen unit houses a 12v fridge and lighting is 12v LED. A Water pipe comes to the cabin from the nearby village supply.

echo-living-tiny-house-8The main entrance door leads into the rear of the building kitchen. Oak chopping board hangs on custom pegs. The yoga teacher’s ornate handle was incorporated into design.

echo-living-tiny-house-3Clad in white composite cladding with an etched surface pattern, the little house on wheels comprises two separate buildings.

echoThe main living accommodation is linked to the shower room and composting toilet by a timber walkway.

echo-living-tiny-house-17To the front, double sliding doors open onto timber decking for indoor-outdoor living and cooling breezes.

echo-cabinNestling in the olive grove under its dappled shade, the little white cabin echoes the buildings in the village on the hills above.

White stone studios make micro-dwelling easy

Master builder Benjamin Hall converted an empty lot into an elegant urban infill project in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Offering six studio apartments, White Stone Studios is the epitome of micro-dwelling made easy. Located in downtown Phoenix, in a neighbourhood that locals call the Triangle, White Stone Studios furnishes a modern, clean aesthetic amidst what might become the city’s new urban hub. These 450-square-foot rentals are flanked with additional 200 square feet of private interior and exterior greenspaces. Custom oversized white oak doors welcome renters to their units, while aging raw steel awnings protect residents from the elements. Hall designed and fabricated all steel components – some of which were built years prior to breaking ground, like this custom door jam, deadbolt and mail-slot piece. white-stone-studios-2The architecture was designed with affordable commodity items in mind, including Ikea cabinetry, Ace Hardware gas pipes and Home Depot appliances.

white-stone-studios-5white-stone-studios-9The walls are built of polished double-sided white concrete masonry units that double as both the interior and exterior finish and are foam-filled for maximum insulation value. The roof also makes use of foam insulation, rendering the building super insulated. The residential complex is optimally positioned for natural daylight while still mitigating direct solar exposure. These two approaches help reduce heating and cooling costs in the Sonoran desert climate.

white-stone-studios-1 white-stone-studios-6 white-stone-studios-8 Laundry, storage and entertainment were integrated into a monolithic pod that can be screened by the translucent curtains to create layers of privacy and separation.

white-stone-studios-4Perceptually, the cozy bathroom increases in dimension due to the full-height window that looks into the private atrium, ideal for a long soak in the bath tub. Hall customized countertops from Ikea into luxury barn door sliders. In addition, he recessing mirrored Ikea medicine cabinets into the block to create a full-height mirrored panel.

white-stone-studios-10The atriums and patios are carved out of the solid exterior shell to provide an abundance of natural light, while maintaining a private and protective mass. The rough wood fencing that wraps the perimeter of the complex is constructed of pallet wood that Hall reclaimed from existing job sites around Phoenix.

With “The Ultimate Cutting Board” you never have to look for anything again

Michael Motamedi and Team Baffi have developed what they claim is the ultimate cutting board, so they named it: ”The Ultimate Cutting Board.” Very original.  The cutting board has multiple functionalities: two cups for measuring, a juicer, a draw for scraps, another draw for knives, there’s even a space for a mandolin and a grater

The board is made from one of the densest woods available. Maple by nature is not only gorgeous; it’s a very tightly grained, hard wood, allowing it to be the perfect candidate for a cutting board. It is quite durable against the blade of a knife and extremely sanitary – the grain in this wood is so tightly packed that it’s virtually impossible for bacteria to grow within the wood.

The cutting board can be separated in two, which serves two main purposes; one is to create quick and easy serving platters and the other is for ease of cleaning & storage. To make it more visually appealing, the team included a walnut inlay on the top surface of the board. This inlay adds a nice touch of design but also lets you know which side belongs to each drawer making it simple and easy on the eyes.

The Ultimate Cutting board 2Mandoline and grater and a knives drawer.

The Ultimate Cutting board32 4oz measuring cups and juicer included.

The Ultimate Cutting board4..and a compost drawer

The Ultimate Cutting board6The larger design inlay lets you know which drawer you are working with

The team behind the cutting board has launched a Kickstarter funding campaign where you can buy one of these multifunctional cutting boards for $133. Learn more here

Artist built a micro gypsy wagon you can tow with your bike

Artist Barry Howard has always loved to design and built tiny living spaces and his gypsy caravan is certainly one of the smallest dwellings I have ever seen.

gypsy-caravan-howard-1 The caravan is so light that it can be towed by a bicycle

gypsy-caravan-howard-2gypsy-caravan-howard-13 The 12 square feet/1.2 m2 floor space of the caravan is actually a bed. Three removable panels under the sleeping pad provide access to Barry’s arts supplies, clothes and the galley.

gypsy-caravan-howard-12A table mounts on the side, as does the small sink, and the one burner camp stove sits on the table, which doubles as counter space for preparing meals.

gypsy-caravan-howard-7The bed can also be converted to a sitting space with a small table which can be used for dining or computer work.

gypsy-caravan-howard-6About 80 % of the materials Barry Howard used for his small gypsy caravan are recycled and repurposed. The aluminium that makes up the chassis and framing for the port-side wall came from an old broken pop-up craft fair booth, as did most of the screws and bolts. The hitch came off a church organ that he dismantled, the wheels from his folding bicycle, the rear stabilizing legs came from a camera tripod he cannibalized, and the fabrics and much of the wood came from his recently deceased minivan camper.

gypsy-caravan-howard-4When Barry Howard uses the caravan as a bicycle trailer, he folds the top down otherwise it would get a bit too top heavy.

gypsy-caravan-howard-10 gypsy-caravan-howard-11Barry Howard is available for hire if anyone needs a gypsy caravan of their own. He does all of the design, building, decorative painting and stained glass himself. Anyone interested can call him at 530-355-1319 or email him at barryhowardstudio@yahoo.com. To see more of his work check out his Facebook page here.

United States takes first place in World Design Rankings 2015

World Design Rankings has just announced the updated design rankings of countries based on the number of design awards won at international juried design competitions and awards. United States ranked as number 1 among the 83 represented countries, followed by Italy, England, Japan, Brazil, China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong and Turkey which took the top positions in 2014.

Five new countries are included in the 2015 rankings: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Colombia, Swaziland, Qatar and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Top 10 changed slightly this year; China ascended in the ladder from 7th to 5th position, which moved Great Britain and Japan a step back. Furthermore, Greece joined the Top 10 from the 10th position by pushing down Republic of Korea which now holds the 11th position.

The ultimate aim of the world design rankings is to contribute to global design culture through advocating and highlighting good design. The rankings aim to provide a snapshot of the state-of-art and design potentials of countries worldwide by highlighting their creative strengths, design weaknesses and available opportunities

The Designer Rankings website provides an overall score and ranking of all designers based on the number of design awards won globally, in more than hundred creative disciplines including product design, graphic design, architecture, interior design, fashion design and service design. One may call that the list of “Top Designers”. The Designer Rankings are accessible online at http://www.designerrankings.com

Mini Micro Trailer gets stylish makeover

Sarah Sitar is a well known real estate agent in Orange County, CA, and has always been an interior design enthusiast at heart. She and her husband recently decided to bring their dream of traveling the world to life. They set out searching for the perfect mini trailer, after determining that vintage was cool but less self sufficient for off road camping they happily decided on their Micro Minnie Winnebago

Today, Sarah invites us to have a special sneak peek at the process of converting their little trailer into a comfortable and stylish home on wheels. Let’s have a look!

Micro Minnie Exterior

When Sarah and her husband sought out to find their miniature trailer, they were looking for something reliable with some of the luxuries of home and great potential, so it’s no surprise when they saw this beauty, they were ready to take it home!

Micro Minnie Interior – Before the Transformation

But when they opened the doors, they quickly found that the interior decor did not match up with their taste. But of course, it was nothing that couldn’t easily be altered. In fact, it was a great starting point.

“We wanted to start out with something that had great bones, but didn’t necessarily need to be in mint condition. I’ve had a lot of experience transforming seemingly hopeless spaces into beautiful pieces of art – and this trailer was no exception. I didn’t see anything dismal, I saw great potential and couldn’t wait to partner with my hubby to turn it into something we would love for years to come!”

Before and After

ææ

Sarah and her husband wanted to incorporate a modern, geometric design for the seats, yet keep it very comfortable. They decided on a deep, burnt orange color with pops of cream and blue to tie it all together. The outcome is absolutely adorable!

The outdated valance above the windows were a little “too 70’s” in design so they picked a pretty bittersweet pattern, and by squaring them off, created a more modern feel. As you can see, the geometric design is carried throughout the tiny trailer, and the nature-inspired pillows add a great touch.

If you enjoyed this design transformation, there’s more where that came from. Follow Sarah Sitar’s blog to see more of her interior design adventures.
